The Boy

The second child that I see this unique, beautiful spirit in is a little boy from a different but beautiful country. I’ve only spent one week in Haiti but it captured my heart that week and has become one of my favorite places in the whole world. My friend, Danielle talked about this amazing country, here.

I met this boy the first day we were in Haiti. Our team and a handful of the kids from the orphanage were going on a day trip to a garden place to get some plants that would be planted around the kids’ house.

We were supposed to “buddy up” with a kid so that they would all be accounted for. My buddy was this amazing little boy. After that day, I looked forward to seeing him everyday and we became such good friends that week.

The first thing you notice about this boy is his huge smile. He has this big amazing smile that takes up most of his face but is filled with so much joy. You see that smile and your heart just fills with love and happiness.

He loves to talk. He is so kind and considerate and just loves getting to know people and their stories. There were so many times where instead of wanting to play basketball or soccer or anything, we would just sit together, with our back against the wall and just chat about everything, our lives, our likes, our dislikes, our hobbies, and it was the most fun I had that week, just getting to know this boy.

“There is always a reason to praise,” he said to me one day.

The last thing you need to know about this boy is that he loves Jesus. It just pours out of him. When you see his huge smile you think that it could only be Jesus shining through him. And when you talk to him about his life all you hear about is a life dedicated to following Jesus.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think about this precious, beautiful life. I am so thankful that I got the privilege of meeting him and that I can still be connected to him through letters. His life and beautiful spirit is such an inspiration to me and meeting him is what showed me how I could “become like a little child” like it says to in Matthew 18.

I strive to have a beautiful, child-like spirit and this was the boy who gave me that motivation.
